According to the college's website, Union is a "small, liberal and independent college committed to integrating the Humanities and Social Sciences with Science and Engineering in new and exciting ways."
Founded in 1795 in Schenectady New York, Union College is one of the oldest educational institutions in the country and has been at the forefront of creating a diverse and welcoming environment for its students since its founding.
The college is home to some of the most intellectually driven students in the country and seeks to broaden its students' level of social and intellectual engagement through various programs and projects.
The Minerva program is one such program that enables students to blend academic, social and residential interests into one whole and definitive experience. Students are assigned to one of the seven Minerva houses during their freshman year, through which they have various opportunities to form a vital network of support and to engage with distinguished faculty and staff.

 Academics/Fields of study

While Union College offers a myriad fields of studies to its undergraduate students, the college encourages it students to think beyond "mere majors". Students are encouraged to explore multiple fields of studies during their respective undergraduate careers. The college believes that this breeds stronger problem-solvers and better thinkers.
The typical Union scholar is not afraid to double major in math and history, learn a foreign language and explore medieval dance music all during his/her time at Union.
In addition to its undergraduate degree programs, the college offers accelerated degree programs in conjunction with other schools. Students can graduate with a law degree from Albany law school in six years and a medical degree from Albany Medical school in 8 years.

The school offers over 100 organizations and clubs, including 15 fraternities and sororities.
